Local stakeholders had the opportunity to provide constructive feedback to Federal Representatives today in Mildura on a proposal to set drought triggers to release a portion of environmental water proposed by NSW Senator Perin Davey.Member for Mallee Anne Webster is supporting Senator Davey to develop a Private Senators Bill that looks to help our Irrigators and the communities along the river remain viable in times of drought while giving a benefit to the environment at the same time.“Today’s consultations have been very constructive, with local stakeholders from industry and local Government from both sides of the river contributing to a vibrant discussion on what they see as challenges with the Basin and possible improvements.” Dr Webster said.“Senator Davey committed at the end of last year to spend time over the summer to meet with stakeholders on the ground as she develops her proposed bill”“I want to thank Senator Davey for taking the time to come to Mallee and consult, knowing that she has spent time recently in the fire ravaged parts of NSW, helping her communities on the ground. Her visit today, taking time away from the fire grounds highlights the importance this issue plays for her communities along the river, just as it is for communities across Mallee.” Dr Webster said.Senator Davey was thankful for the opportunity to discuss the proposal and its implications with local stakeholders.“It is important that we look at all aspects and potential impacts both positive and negative. We need to ensure the outcomes we want to achieve are achieved without negative consequences. These discussions are a part of the process to ensure that if we do go forward with this bill we do so knowingly that it will work.” Senator Davey said.“The key is that we do no harm,” she said. “The consultations that have occurred to date have been really important to identify both opportunity and risk. We now need to consolidate all the feedback and decide the best way to proceed to benefit our communities.”
