The inexcusable, horrific attack on Federal Member for Indi Dr Helen Haines is a tragedy and a sobering reminder that political disagreement must never become intimidation, abuse or violence.
We have always been able to disagree strongly in Australia. I have written in this column about Labor Governments’ neglect and failure towards regional Australians on the cost-of-living, health, energy, infrastructure and so much more. That is my job – to be your voice, in Canberra, as I seek to reflect the views of our community. It is my role to criticise government failures, robustly and without apology.
Our democracy also depends on remembering that the person we are debating is still a human being, representing their community and the interests that put them there.
For generations, The Nationals have proudly and happily practised face-to-face politics. I and my Nationals colleagues hold mobile offices, attend community events, walk down the main street and listen to people whether they agree with us or not.
That remains my approach across Mallee, including in Mildura and Sunraysia.
Security agencies and risk managers strongly are advising we politicians to pull back and not tell you when and where we are. I cannot do that. As politicians, fear must not reduce our service to you down to a risk management exercise. That is no way to live, and it is no way to stand up for you in Canberra, in the media and online.
If fear silences us, we may as well quit – and I won’t be.
I urge readers to do their own thinking, not doomscroll on social media. Offshore-based algorithms reward shock, outrage, AI-slop and ‘clickbait’. Why not - instead - talk to your family about what you see on the news? Talk to your friends and workmates. Ask someone who disagrees with you why they see things differently and demonstrate that civil, friendly conversation that is a hallmark of the Australian character.
By all means criticise governments and politicians. Hold us accountable. Argue your case passionately and, please, let’s all remember the value of every human being.
