On 16 August many people from across our district gathered in Robinvale for another successful Almond Blossom Festival. I am sorry I was unable to attend due to Parliament sitting in Canberra. I know how much work goes on behind the scenes for these important civic events, and I congratulate the committee, volunteers, sponsors, performers and community for their efforts.

In our first sitting fortnight back in Canberra, The Nationals stood firm against Labor’s mean-spirited $5,000 cap on allied health services for veterans.  Veterans and all Australians rightly expect those who have put their lives on the line for our nation to access the care they need - not to have to ration their care.

The Nationals continued to put aged care in the national spotlight, and I note serious similar concerns have been raised through a recent Four Corners program.  Well over 200,000 people are either waiting for an assessment, waiting for care services to be provided, or have had their package eligibility downgraded by 40 per cent.  Every older Australian deserves dignity, respect and quality care, regardless of where they live. Regional communities should get the same standard of care available elsewhere.

The Nationals are also calling out yet another Labor attempt at a carbon tax by stealth, a ‘carbon intensity standard’ for petrol, diesel and aviation fuels. For regional Australians, fuel is not a luxury. It is how we get to work, take children to school, attend medical appointments and keep businesses moving.  The Nationals will oppose any policy that increases costs or increases the tyranny of distance.

I also encourage everyone who has not yet completed their Census to do so, so that Robinvale is counted. The Census helps governments, businesses and community organisations understand changing populations and plan for future services and infrastructure.  The ABS (www.census.abs.gov.au/help or call 1800 181 227) will help you complete your Census  – those making a genuine effort to participate will not be fined.
