The National Party Federal Conference, held on the weekend, saw the adoption of a motion moved by Anne Webster, Member for Mallee, regarding undocumented workers in the horticulture industry.
The motion, which was passed unopposed, calls for the design of an appropriate visa for undocumented workers in the horticultural industry, which would be delivered as a pandemic status resolution and would allow for either permanent or temporary legal status.
“I’m really pleased that the motion was adopted by the Federal Conference. It’s great to have the support of the party behind my call for a status resolution for undocumented workers.” Dr Webster said.
“The fact that the motion was passed unopposed shows that perceptions around this measure have changed. Given the workforce crisis facing the industry, the National Party understands that this measure could go a long way to solving the problems we face.”
“We’ve got a lot of work left to do to convince our colleagues in the coalition, but I won’t shy away from the challenge. I truly believe this is the best option for the horticulture industry, and for undocumented people living and working in our communities. This challenge is bigger than politics and its worth fighting for.”
“I know that industry is on board with this push, and the idea has been backed by the recent Learning to Excel report, released by the National Agriculture Labour Advisory Committee.”
“For many of these people, their only crime is overstaying their welcome. They aren’t dangerous criminals. They are working hard to help feed our nation and they are contributing to our communities. Its time they are recognised.”
“At the moment, these people are stuck working with unscrupulous contractors who are exploiting them. Recognising these people will allow them to seek employment with employers and growers that do the right thing. This will significantly increase the pool of legal labour in the country.”
“A status resolution will prevent exploitation and help with workforce shortages. For me it’s a no-brainer.”
