Distressed, devastated and facing an uncertain future

2026 has begun with a bang—but sadly, not in a good way. The recent fires have left many distressed and devastated, facing an uncertain future. While support is being offered, I trust it will be delivered promptly.

The ferocity of these fires, driven by soaring temperatures and raging winds, created catastrophic conditions. Our incredible volunteer firefighters and emergency workers fought bravely, often to the point of exhaustion. None of us ever want to face such tragedy, and although the destruction is heartbreaking, I am profoundly grateful that no lives were lost.

To every volunteer—whatever your role—you are absolute gems. Without your willingness to jump in and do all you could, the outcome could have been far worse. Many of you have shared frustrations about the lack of preparedness for fire season. Current legislation that prohibits burn-offs, clearing dead wood, slashing undergrowth near roads and creeks, and grazing cattle in National Parks is simply unacceptable. The Victorian Government must do better and fix this mess.

I want to acknowledge the Natimuk, Quantong, Vectis, Vectis East, and Vectis South communities for pulling together and supporting one another as plans are made to rebuild. Constructing 16 homes, fencing farms, and replacing sheds reduced to ash will take time—but help is on its way.

Volunteer teams such as Rapid Relief Team, BlazeAid and many others are truly inspirational. Please thank them when you see them. Horsham Rural City Council has also been outstanding in its engagement with the community, and I extend my gratitude for their efforts.

Finally, if you experience any difficulty accessing grants or financial assistance, help is available. Please visit Victoria Bushfires, January 2026 – Services Australia, and if you need further support, call my office on 5021 5987.
