Australia Post has suspended postage of major items sent to the United States and Puerto Rico due to President Donald Trump’s suspension of duty-free treatment for low-value shipments, which could have significant consequences for many Australian businesses.
It has been 294 days since President Trump was elected, and Prime Minister Albanese still has not met with the US leader.
Shadow Minister for Regional Communications, Dr Anne Webster MP, said Australia Post’s changes for postal services again underline the importance of the Albanese Labor Government securing a meeting with the United States President to discuss the tariff dispute immediately.
“The decision to suspend duty-free status for certain shipments is due to the on-going tariff dispute and could have massive economic impacts on Australian businesses," Dr Webster said.
“Australia Post is our national postage service, and the Albanese Labor Government should explain what is going on.
“It begs the question: why hasn’t the Prime Minister met with the United States President Donald Trump to discuss the tariff dispute which continues to have more direct impacts on Australia’s economy?”
The suspension applies to goods sent between individuals to the USA or Puerto Rico of a value of over $100 US Dollars, with more significant compliance and cost now required for business sales into the USA or Puerto Rico
